Herbert Cushing Tolman, “A Guide to
the Old Persian Inscriptions”, 1893 was the topic of an earlier blog post.
Here I present: Herbert Cushing Tolman, “Ancient Persian Lexicon & Texts”, 1908.
INTRODUCTION.
Originally printed in 1908, this text is a preservation of Old Persian inscriptions, such as Behistun, Nakhsh-i Rustam, Suez. The texts are presented in transcription and translation form, with a dictionary in the second half. The “Ancient Persian Lexicon” (shown BELOW) is alphabetical-order transliterated Old Persian (no cuneiform).
EXAMPLE of “Texts”.
BENEATH is the inscriptions of Behistun. Behistun is a town in Iran, site of several ancient monuments, including a famous inscription by the Persian king Darius I the Great (522-486 BC), the great organizer of the Achaemenid Empire. (shown ATOP is the Behistun site). If you imagined yourselves walking at Behistun, you could read the writing carved into the rock face. The inscriptions are architectural aspects of the ATOP Behistun archeological site.
