INTRODUCTION.
Ulcerative colitis is one (1) of the two (2) types of inflammatory bowel disease, with the other type being Crohn’s disease. It is a long-term condition that results in inflammation and ulcers of the colon. Primary symptoms of active disease are abdominal pain and diarrhea mixed with blood (hematochezia). Weight loss, fever, and anemia may also occur. Symptoms come on slowly and can range from mild to severe. Symptoms typically occur intermittently with periods of no symptoms between flares. Complications may include abnormal dilation of the colon (megacolon), inflammation of the eye, joints, or liver, and colon cancer.
There is evidence that ulcerative colitis is caused by mutation in the inflammatory bowel disease type-11 gene (IBM11) on cytogenetic location 7q22 and genomic coordinates 7:98,400,001-107,800,000. The screenshot of the IBM11 gene 9,400,000 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides IBM11 in the 7q22 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
