INTRODUCTION.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the major histologic type of malignant primary liver neoplasm. It is the fifth most common cancer and the third most common cause of death from cancer worldwide. The major risk factors for HCC are chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, prolonged dietary aflatoxin exposure, alcoholic cirrhosis, and cirrhosis due to other causes. Hepatoblastomas comprise 1 to 2% of all malignant neoplasms of childhood, most often occurring in children under 3 years of age. Hepatoblastomas are thought to be derived from undifferentiated hepatocytes.
There is evidence somatic mutations in a number of different genes have been identified in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatoblastoma. These include insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF2R) on cytogenetic location 6q25.3 and genomic coordinates 6:159,969,082-160,111,504. The screenshot of the IGF2R gene 142,423 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides IGF2R in the 6q25.3 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
