“Braille Code for Chemical Notation”, American Printing House for the Blind, 1997 was the topic of an earlier blog post.
Here I present: Dwight G. McSmith, Periodic Table’ Display Device, Patent-1973.
INTRODUCTION.
The “ABSTRACT” of the invention is as follows:
ABSTRACT.
“A three dimensional device for displaying the chemical elements’ in substantially continuous helical sequence with substantially all elements’ arranged to be adjacent to those having sequential atomic number and with those of the same chemical family or group being arranged in the same column. A rotor in the device has indicia denoting the lanthanides and actinides and is rotatable to expose selected indicia through a window in the device.
COMMENTS.
I asked myself who is it that could benefit from this invention. It seemed to me that the Braille reading students could benefit from the invention.
APPLICATIONS.
The three dimensional display I envision with: (1) blank, (2) only Braille, and (3) Braille & print are shown BENEATH. The “tactile sense” of “finger seeing” of the periodic table’ is different way of thinking for both sighted and sightless.
