INTRODUCTION.
The interferon (IFN) genes (including multiple IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, IFN-epsilon, IFN-kappa, and IFN-omega genes) are clustered on cytogenetic location 9p21.3 and genomic coordinate 9:21,440,439. Alpha-interferon deficiency is a life-threatening primary immunodeficiency, which can be caused by specific genetic mutations that impair the body’s ability to produce or respond to type-I interferons. This deficiency leaves individuals highly susceptible to severe, progressive, or even fatal viral diseases, particularly from common viruses like influenza and vaccine-strain viruses (e.g., measles, mumps, rubella, yellow fever).
