INTRODUCTION.
Burkitt lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, particularly B-lymphocytes found in the germinal center. It is named after Denis Parsons Burkitt, the Irish surgeon who first described the disease in 1958. It is a highly aggressive form of cancer which often, manifests after a person develops acquired immunodeficiency from infection with Epstein-Barr Virus or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Burkitt lymphoma is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma that accounts for 50% of lymphoma in children but only 1% of lymphoma in adults.
Burkitt lymphoma results from chromosomal translocations that involve the MYC gene and either the lambda or the kappa light chain immunoglobulin genes.
The MYC-protooncogene transcription factor-bHLH (MYC) gene is encoded on cytogenetic location 8q24.21 and genomic coordinates 8:127,735,434-127,742,951. The screenshot of the MYC gene 7,518 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides MYC in the 8q24.21 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
