Carl Linnaeus, “Genera Morborum (Varieties of Disease)”, 1759. PART THREE (III).
INTRODUCTION.
The scientific classification of disease, calling nosology – aimed at distinguishing healthy tissue from unhealthy tissue, one illness from another illness – began at the autopsy table with dissection, examination, and identification of abnormalities of organs and tissues visible to the naked eye.
ONTOLOGIES FOR DISEASE CLASSIFICATION.
The first modern medical classification that can be considered a true ontology of diseases (nosology) was developed by Carl Linnaeus in 1759, who divided diseases into 11 classes, 37 orders, and 325 species.
COMMENTS.
Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was the son of Robert Waring Darwin, a physician. When Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) and Charles Robert Darwin presented their research to the Linnaean Society the ideas of molecules was absent. Today, human chromosomal DNA (shown ATOP) are popular culture, the viewpoint of nosology is chromosomal DNA. Veterinarian and physician both use commercial laboratories to study the same disease in different species.
