INTRODUCTION.
Serotonin receptors are a group of G protein-coupled receptor and ligand-gated ion channels found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. They mediate both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. The serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) receptors are activated by the neurotransmitter serotonin, which acts as their natural ligand.
There is evidence that the serotonin (5-hydoxytrypamine) receptor (HTR1A) gene is encoded on cytogenetic location 5q12.3 and genomic coordinates 5:63,957,874-63,962,445. The screenshot of the HTR1A gene 4,572 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides HTR1A in the 5q12.3 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
