Here I present: “Coriell Institute for Medical Research”, catalogue-1953.
INTRODUCTION.
Coriell Institute for Medical Research—originally known as South Jersey Medical Research Foundation and then as the Institute for Medical Research—was founded by famed virologist Lewis Coriell in 1953. Lewis Coriell was a scientific pioneer, making invaluable contributions to biomedical research through advances in aseptic cell culture techniques and cryopreservation of cell lines.
The Coriell Institute for Medical Research was one of the first two official cell banks recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1960. In 1972 was established at the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, the NIGMS Repository containing more than 11,900 cell lines (primarily fibroblasts and transformed lymphoblasts), and more than 5,900 DNA samples. These samples comprise over 1,100 different OMIM diagnoses.
COMMENTS.
Sabin-Salk-Coriell were three pioneers in development of poliomyelitis vaccines.
Albert Sabin, Jonas Salk & Lewis Coriell were in an era that established cell lines that are the backbone of the Victor McKusick, Mendelian Inheritance in Man’, 1966.
John O’Donnell, “CORIELL: The Coriell Institute for Medical Research: and, Half a Century of Science”, 2002 is a book on the history of this blog post. It is a recommended reference on the topic.
