INTRODUCTION. This is a classic reference paper in cytogenetics published in 1971, the same time as Marina Seabright’ Giemsa stain. Fluorescence stained chromosomes are colorful. Colorfully presented also is a “table of gene symbols”. Symbols are simply abbreviations of terms for genetic loci (locus). Following the “color table of symbols” are the chromosomes for the gene locus is on. Example, symbol for “insulin’ gene” is INS; and IDDM is the gene symbol for “insulin’-dependent diabetes mellitus”. In communication the preference, is symbol abbreviations as they are more compact in writing.
