Oliver Sacks, “The Island of the Colorblind“, 1997 medical, nonfiction was the subject of an earlier blog post. Similarly, here I present H. G. Wells, “The Country of the Blind”, 1904 which was a science fiction novel of a population composed entirely of visually-blind people. H. G. Wells, “The Invisible Man “, 1897 was an earlier Well’s story on the inability to see.
“Braille” is the name of system of writing, based upon six raised dots; which, was created in 1821 by French schoolboy Louis Braille. “Braille” is a medium through which visually-blind people can learn to read and write (shown in the alphabet table, above). H. G. Wells, “The Country of the Blind”, 1904 was a science fiction novel about blindness; and, Louis Braille’s 1821 system of Braille printing allowed for the blind to read this book (or any book).
