γ-Synuclein (SNCG) Breast Cancer Specificity.
γ-Synuclein (SNCG) is a small (~127 aa) cytosolic protein of the synuclein family (α, β, γ).
Unlike α-synuclein (neuronal, Parkinson disease–related), γ-synuclein is minimally expressed in most normal adult tissues, including normal breast epithelium.
Why it is Considered Breast Cancer–specific.
Aberrant overexpression of γ-synuclein is seen in a high proportion of breast carcinomas, while it is absent or very low in normal breast tissue.
Early transcriptomic and immunohistochemical studies showed tumor-restricted activation of SNCG in breast cancer, supporting its use as a tumor marker rather than a lineage marker.
