Here I present the: Lernert & Sander’s “Cubes” Project, 2014.
The image shared is a famous art project by Dutch artists Lernert Engelberts and Sander Plug
- Details: Created in 2014 for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, the piece features 98 different unprocessed foods—kiwi, tuna, salmon, fruits, vegetables, meats … etcetera—cut into precise 1 x 1 x 1 inch cubes and arranged in a grid.
- Technique: The artists used a custom-built machine to slice the foods and then digitally composited the rows of photos to achieve perfect alignment and perspective, a physical impossibility with raw foods.
- Concept: The project aimed to “aesthetically process the unprocessed” by imposing sterile geometry onto natural, organic items, which highlights the unique differences between each food.
Other Food-Related Art Projects.
While Lernert & Sander’s approach of cubing raw foods is unique, other artists explore similar themes of geometric food presentation’:
- Adam Hillman: Known as an “object arranger,” Hillman creates intricate, mesmerizing patterns and tessellations using everyday items, including food like cereal, candy, and produce. His work focuses on texture and color gradients rather than raw identification.
- Florent Tanet: This French photographer’s series like “A Colorful Winter” features highly composed, minimalist still lifes of colorful fruits and vegetables. He emphasizes composition, symmetry, and color coordination, treating his food arrangements like sculptures or paintings.
