INTRODUCTION.
Boye Lafayette De Mente, “Kodansha Tokyo Subway Guide’, 2002 was a“guide-book” that was bilingual English & Japanese. 1. Chuo, 2. Shibuya, 3. Minato, 4. Toshima, 5. Taito, 6. Shinjuku & 7. Chiyoda are the core “wards” of the chikatetsu” 地下鉄 (the Japanese word for subway). The “Yamanote ” loop of “JR” (Japan Railways) is a line that encircles the 7-core “wards” of Tokyo.
ABOVE subway map reads clockwise from the top the 16 “Yamanote” stations are: Komagome, Nishi-Nippori, Ueno, Akihabara, Kanda, Tokyo, Yurakucho, Shinbashi, Shinagawa, Meguro, Ebisu, Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku, Takadanobaba & Ikebukuro
The ATOP image is of the full railway map of the Tokyo and surrounding suburban area, which includes the complex metro, JR, suburban, and Shinkansen lines.
This extensive map is known for its density and number of interconnected lines, which allows travel almost anywhere in the Tokyo/Yokohama metro region. While it can appear overwhelming, the system is highly convenient and easy to navigate once the line colors and station numbering system are understood.
