INTRODUCTION.
Myc is a family of regulator genes and proto-oncogenes that code for transcription factors. The Myc family consists of three (3) related human genes: c-myc (MYCC), l-myc (MYCL), and n-myc (MYCN).
C-myc (also referred to as Myc) was the first gene to be discovered in this family.
Burkitt lymphoma is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma that accounts for 50% of lymphomas in children but only 2% of lymphomas in adults. It results from chromosomal translocations that involve the MYC gene and either the lambda or the kappa light chain immunoglobulin genes. Burkitt lymphoma is causally related to the Epstein-Barr virus although the pathogenetic mechanisms are not clear.
The MYC gene is on cytogenetic location 8q24.21, the breakpoint in Burkitt lymphoma translocations at genomic coordinate 8:127,735,434-127,742,951. The screenshot of the MYC gene 7,518 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides MYC in the 8q24.21 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
