Here I present: “P-Glycoprotein (Multidrug Resistance)”, Victor McKusick, Mendelian Inheritance in Man’, 1966.
INTRODUCTION.
Colchicine resistance, inflammatory bowel disease-13, and, acute transient encephalopathy are three (3) disorders associated with mutations in the P-glycoprotein (multidrug resistance) gene.
P-glycoprotein (multidrug resistance) is an important protein of the cell membrane that pumps many xenobiotic substances out of cells. More formally, it is an ATP-dependent efflux pump with broad substrate specificity.
The ABCB1 gene encodes a transmembrane transporter P-glycoprotein that pumps out a wide range of xenobiotic compounds from cells. ABCB1 is expressed in plasma membranes of various cells and organs, including the blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelium.
There is evidence that the ATP-binding cassette subfamily-B member-1 (ABCB1) is encoded on 7q21.12 cytogenetic location and genomic coordinates 7:87,503,017-87,713,295. The screenshot of the ABCB1 gene 210,279 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides ABCB1 in the 7q21.12 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
