INTRODUCTION.
Psoriasis vulgaris (PV) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis that affects approximately 2% of the population. It is characterized by red, scaly skin patches that are usually found on the scalp, elbows, and knees, and may be associated with severe arthritis. The lesions are caused by abnormal keratinocyte proliferation and infiltration of inflammatory cells into the dermis and epidermis. The usual age ofonset of psoriasis is between 15 and 30 years.
There is evidence that psoriasis susceptibility is conferred by variation in MHC gene (HLA-C) on cytogenetic location 6p21.33 and genomic coordinates 6:31,268,749-31,272,092. The screenshot of the HLA-C genes 3,344 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides HLA-C in the 6p21.33 cytogenetic location are listed BENEATH.
