INTRODUCTION.
Ovarian serous adenocarcinoma is a type of epithelial ovarian cancer and accounts for about 90% of all ovarian cancers. Women aged 65 and older are most affected by ovarian cancer. As a result of the lack of effective screening tests, most women are diagnosed with advanced cancer.
Ovarian cancer, the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancy, is characterized by advanced presentation with loco-regional dissemination in the peritoneal cavity and the rare incidence of visceral metastases. These typical features relate to the biology of the disease, which is a principal determinant of outcome. Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most common form and encompasses 5 major histologic subtypes: papillary serous, endometrioid, mucinous, clear cell, and transitional cell. Epithelial ovarian cancer arises as a result of genetic alterations sustained by the ovarian surface epithelium.
Parkin (PRKN) is a RING domain-containing E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in proteasome-dependent degradation of proteins. Parkin (PRKN) is also important for mitochondrial quality control by lysosome-dependent degradation of damaged mitochondria through autophagy, or mitophagy.
Ovarian serous cancer has been associated with somatic changes in several genes, including Parkin (PRKN) on cytogenetic location 6q26 and genomic coordinates 6:161,347,417-162,727,766.
