INTRODUCTION.
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized variously by hallucinations (typically, hearing voices), delusions, and behavior. Symptoms develop gradually and typically begin during young adulthood and are never resolved. There is no objective diagnostic test; diagnosis is based on observed behavior, a psychiatric history that includes the person’s reported experiences, and reports of others familiar with the person. For a diagnosis of schizophrenia, the described symptoms need to have been present for at least six months.
Schizophrenia is a psychosis, a disorder of thought and sense of self. Although it affects emotions, it is distinguished from mood disorders in which such disturbances are primary. Similarly, there may be mild impairment of cognitive function, and it is distinguished from the dementias in which disturbed cognitive function is considered primary. There is no characteristic pathology, such as neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer disease. Schizophrenia is a common disorder with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 1%. It is highly heritable, but the genetics are complex.
There is evidence that schizophrenia type-1 (SZD1) is caused by a gene on cytogenetic location 5q23-q35 and genomic coordinates 5:115,900,001-181,538,259.
