Beginning in Chapter 1. “Forward”, we are introduced to a ship named “Forward”. “Forward” is at dock in England; and, gathering a ship crew for an expedition. The protagonist is “Captain John Hatteras”; and, Part 1. is entitled “The English at the North Pole”. This a story time-setting of 1861, of a British expedition to the North Pole. “Captain Hatteras” is convinced that the sea around the pole is not frozen, and his obsession is to reach the North Pole no matter what.
