SUMMARY.

The novel recounts the travels of a group of British colonists during the British Raj in India.  Verne uses a wheeled house pulled by a steam-powered mechanical elephant as a plot-device for the reader in this travel in nineteenth century India.

The book takes place in the aftermath of the 1857 Indian Rebellion against British Raj rule; and, 6,000 British people were killed in the rebellion.

A historical figure Nana Sahib (the rebel leader) is the antagonist of the story.  Colonel Edward Munro is the protagonist of the story; whose motive is to find and kill Nana Sahib of the Cawnpore massacre.   A railroad engineer named Mister Banks is the foil character; and, he invented the steam-powered mechanical elephant, which pulls two carriages across both land and water.   The steam elephant is named “Behemoth“; and, it defeats three actual elephants in the story.  Lady Munro is the wife of the protagonist Colonel Munro; and, the safety of Lady Munro drives the plot.

Jules Verne, “Around the World in Eighty Days”, 1872 was the topic of an earlier blog post.
