INTRODUCTION.
Jacques Cousteau was among the first to show undersea camera images of sponges. “Barrel sponges” of the Carribbean Sea have lifespans of 200 to 1,300 years. “Barrel sponges” of the Pacific Ocean have growth rates of 1cm/year. To see Jacques Cousteau and others swim beside “Barrel sponges” was a turning point for the “ecology movement”.
