Maya codices are pre-Columbian books made by the Maya civilization, written in Maya hieroglyphs on bark-paper folded like an accordion. Four (4) codices are known to have survived the Spanish conquest.
1. Dresden Codex – Named after Dresden, Germany, where it is held. It is the most complete codex and primarily deals with astronomy, calendars, and rituals.
2. Madrid Codex – Located in Madrid, Spain. Focuses on rituals, ceremonies, and divination.
3. Paris Codex – Housed in Paris, France. Contains astronomical tables, zodiacal signs, and prophecy-related content.
4. Grolier Codex (also called the Sáenz Codex) – Its authenticity was debated but is now generally accepted. Found in Mexico, it is a fragmentary codex with ritual and possibly Venus-cycle information.
