INTRODUCTION.
The pathogenesis of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 (HIV1) infection and the progression from infection to AIDS vary significantly between exposed individuals. Infection occurs after the virus, which has macrophage (M)- and T lymphocyte (T)-tropic strains and more than 12 subtypes, survives an array of nonspecific, nongenetic environmental and host factors.
Variation in several different genes influences susceptibility and resistance to HIV-1 infection and the rate of progression to AIDS after infection including major histocompatibility-complex, class I-C (HLA-C) on cytogenetic location 6p21.33 and genomic coordinates 6:31,268,749-31,272,092. The screenshot of the HLA-C gene 3,344 bp (base pairs) of DNA sequence length is shown BELOW. Nine (9) other genes besides HLA-C on cytogenetic location 6p21.33 are listed BENEATH.
