Edwin Abbott, “Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions”, 1884 was the topic of an earlier blog post. Similarly here I present: Rudolf & Joan Benesh, “An Introduction to Benesh Dance Notation”, 1969 which was a mathematician approach to Dance notation.

 Ballet is not merely dance; but, analogous to “sign language” (to deaf) is a “stage performance language”.  Sign language allows the deaf to communicate with “hand movements”.  Ballet “spectators” receive “language-like” communications from the body movements of dancers.   The body is represented on the four-space & five lines used in music score (shown in diagram below).
Rudolf Benesh (1916-1975), was by profession a mathematician; and, Joan Benesh was a professional dancer (wife of Rudolf).  An example of the “music-score like” Benesh notation is shown below; and the Benesh notation is located beneath the music score in ballet.
