The annual book competition is very prestigious in the Japanese-American community. The recent 34th “annual author recognition” recipient was in 2020 to George Takei (Mister Sulu, of “Star Trek” fame).
Yuji Ichioka (1988), “The Issei: The World of the First Generation Japanese Immigrants 1885-1924 was the first “annual author recognition” recipient in 1989 of the Little Tokyo Branch Library of the Los Angeles Public Library. Yuji Ichioka (1936-2002) was an authority in “Immigration Studies”; and, “The Issei”, 1988 was an example of his Japanese-American scholarship.
Yuji 一世 Ichioka, “The Issei” 一世, 1988 (as shown below and above) is available in both English and Japanese translations. The term “Asian-American” was first coined by Yuji Ichioka in 1968.
