Cynthia 門畑 Kadohata かどはた, “Kira-Kira きらきら”, 2004.

Cynthia 門畑 Kadohata かどはた, “Kira-Kira きらきら”, 2004 was a novel of young Japanese-American sisters.  The story is set in 1950’s rural Georgia: and, the girls are among only 31 Japanese-Americans in this Deep South town.

“Lynn” (protagonist) and “Katie” (foil character) “Takeshima” are five and nine years old, respectively.  The parents of the two girls labor in a chicken-processing plant.

In the Japanese language “kira-kira” きらきら means “twinkling”.  According to “Lynn Takeshima” her older sister “Katie” makes everything seem “kira-kira” きらきら (twinkling).   “Katie Takeshima” (the older sister) becomes ill.   The younger sister, “Lynn Takeshima” becomes caregiver until “Katie” dies of “lymphoma”.
