John Harrison & Nevil Maskelyae, “The Principles of Mr. Harrison’s Time Keeper”, 1767.

John Harrison and Nevil Maskelyae, “The Principles of Mr. Harrison’s Time Keeper: (with Plates of the Same)”, 1767 was a popular science book on the design of the “mariners” chronometer.   Navigation requires accurate time keeping and John Harrison invented what today we call the “pocket watch”.

Co-writer Nevil Maskelyae was the first person to determine density of Earth (5 g/cc) and to know the Mass of the Earth.  Harrison Horblit, “100 Books Famous in the History of Science”, 1964 lists this book.  It is today hard to imagine not having the invention of the “watch”.  Time-keepers, and other scientific instruments are part of everyday life today.
